We all love sleeping in a clean bed with crisp clean sheets and bedding. However, majority of people have never cleaned their mattress for years despite routinely changing their bedding. Over time, mattresses just get dirty. Whether you are trying to do basic cleaning or getting rid of a stain, there are different techniques you can use with materials you typically have on hand.
Mattresses can have multiple stains like urine, vomit, blood, bedbug stains, body fluids, sweat, food and beverages. It is important to know the kind of detergents whether home made of commercial detergents to use so as to effectively remove the stains as well as maintain the integrity of the mattress fabric and fibres.
Supplies and equipment for cleaning a mattress at home.
- Sodium Bicarbonate or Baking Soda
- White Vinegar
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Mild liquid dish washing soap (use the brand you prefer)
- Soft brush (used toothbrush for a small area stain, or a soft brush that will not destroy the mattress fabric. Being in the cleaning industry, one can also improvise by cutting a piece of sack material (“gunia”)
- Wet and Dry vacuum cleaner (can hire one at a pocket friendly rate)
Guideline for stain removal.
White vinegar is acidic and works perfectly on;
- Fresh blood
- Vomit stains
- Coffee stains
- Wine stains
Hydrogen Peroxide
Good for;
- Sweat stains
- Blood stains
Baking Soda
Works well for;
- Bedbug stains
- Urine stains
- Old stains
- Sweat stains
Process
- Use dry vacuuming to rid the mattress of any dust or debris
- Apply a handful of baking soda or use a spray can to apply the white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide depending on which stain you want to remove (guideline for stain removal outlined above) to the stained area and let it rest for 20 minutes.
- In a bucket of water, mix the mild liquid dish washing soap generously till it foams.
- Use a soft brush/toothbrush/soft sack cloth and the foam formed from mixing water and liquid dish soap to gently rub the stain area till the stain is removed.
- Repeat this till the stain is completely gone.
- Use wet vacuuming to absorb excess water that may be retained.
- Take the mattress out to air dry.
Caution
- Make sure that while wet vacuuming all excess water from the foamy water is completely extracted to avoid any water retention that will cause foul smell.
- Only use the foam and avoid at all costs using excess water on the mattress.
- Commercial detergents are equally effective but exercise caution while using them as they may destroy the mattress all together by corroding it.
In conclusion, sometimes that old stain requires professional cleaning. In that case, you might consider renting a commercial steam cleaner to remove stains from your mattress. Not only will this work to deodorize, but it will get rid of those old stains.
Additionally, the best practice is to seek the services of an experienced cleaning company to do the cleaning for you as most have first hand experience on the right detergents to use and how to mix them thus ensuring that you get the best results of both a clean mattress as well as ensure the integrity of the mattress is maintained.
